Seeds for glowing skin include pumpkin (zinc), sunflower (vitamin E), chia and flax (omega-3 ALA) and sesame. These nutrients support normal skin health, but no seed works overnight or cures acne. Eat about 1–2 tablespoons a day as part of a balanced diet, drink water, sleep well and use sunscreen.
Can seeds really give you glowing skin?
Seeds provide nutrients your skin needs, such as zinc, vitamin E and healthy fats. If your diet is low in these, adding seeds can help. But research on seeds for skin is limited, and most studies used supplements rather than whole seeds. Seeds support healthy skin; they aren’t a quick fix.
5 best seeds for glowing skin
| Seed | Key nutrient | Amount (per serving) | Role in skin health |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pumpkin seeds | Zinc | about 2.2 mg per 28 g (1 ounce), roasted | Zinc supports wound healing and normal skin repair |
| Sunflower seeds | Vitamin E | about 7.4 mg per 28 g, dry roasted | Vitamin E is an antioxidant found in skin |
| Flaxseeds | Omega-3 (ALA) | about 2.35 g per tablespoon, whole | Healthy fats are part of the skin barrier |
| Chia seeds | Omega-3 (ALA), fibre | about 5 g ALA per 28 g | Healthy fats plus fibre for overall health |

Nutrient amounts are from the U.S. National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements fact sheets.
What the research says
- Flaxseed oil: a small 12-week trial in women (Neukam and colleagues, 2011) found that daily flaxseed oil supplements reduced skin sensitivity and water loss and improved skin roughness and hydration compared with placebo. This used oil capsules, not whole seeds.
- Zinc and acne: a 2020 meta-analysis found people with acne tended to have lower blood zinc levels, and zinc treatment helped reduce inflammatory spots. These studies used zinc supplements, not seeds, so eating pumpkin seeds isn’t a proven acne treatment.
- Overall: a balanced diet with enough healthy fats, protein, fruit and vegetables supports skin health better than any single food.
Easy 5-seed trail mix for skin
| Ingredient | Amount |
|---|---|
| Pumpkin seeds | 2 tablespoons |
| Sunflower seeds | 2 tablespoons |
| Flaxseeds (lightly roasted, or ground separately) | 1 tablespoon |
| Sesame seeds (roasted) | 1 tablespoon |
| Chia seeds | 1 tablespoon (best soaked or sprinkled on curd) |
- Dry-roast pumpkin, sunflower, sesame and flax seeds on low heat for 3–4 minutes. Cool and store in an airtight jar for up to 2 weeks.
- Eat 1–2 tablespoons a day on curd, salads, poha, oats or smoothies.
- Ground flaxseed is easier to digest than whole flaxseed.
- Add chia separately: soak it in water or milk for 15 minutes, or sprinkle it on moist foods.
Who should be careful
- Seeds are calorie-dense: 1 tablespoon of mixed seeds has roughly 50–60 kcal, so watch portions if you’re losing weight.
- Sesame is a common food allergen; avoid it if you’re allergic.
- Chia and flax are high in fibre; increase slowly and drink water.
- If you take blood thinners or have a medical condition, ask your doctor before taking seed oil supplements.
Other habits that matter more for glowing skin
- Use sunscreen daily; sun damage is a major cause of skin ageing.
- Sleep 7 or more hours a night.
- Drink enough water, especially in hot weather. See our healthy summer drinks.
- Eat plenty of fruit, vegetables and protein. See our healthy eating habits and dry fruits guide.
- Don’t smoke, and see a dermatologist for persistent acne or skin problems.
Frequently asked questions
Which seeds are best for glowing skin?
Pumpkin seeds (zinc), sunflower seeds (vitamin E), flax and chia seeds (omega-3 ALA) and sesame seeds are all good choices. They provide nutrients that support normal skin health. Eat a mix of 1–2 tablespoons a day as part of a balanced diet for the best overall benefit.
Are chia seeds good for skin?
Chia seeds provide omega-3 ALA, fibre and some protein, which support overall health, including skin. There’s little direct research on chia seeds and skin. They’re a healthy addition to your diet, but they won’t transform your skin on their own.
Do pumpkin seeds help acne?
Pumpkin seeds are rich in zinc, and a 2020 meta-analysis found zinc supplements may reduce inflammatory acne. However, eating pumpkin seeds hasn’t been shown to treat acne. For persistent acne, see a dermatologist for proven treatments.
How many seeds should I eat per day?
About 1–2 tablespoons of mixed seeds a day is a sensible amount for most adults. Seeds are calorie-dense, so larger amounts can add up quickly. Increase flax and chia slowly and drink water, as they’re high in fibre.
Can seeds give glowing skin overnight?
No. Skin cells renew over weeks, and no food works overnight. Seeds support skin health slowly as part of a balanced diet. Daily sunscreen, good sleep, hydration and not smoking make a bigger difference to how your skin looks.
Is flaxseed good for skin?
Flaxseed is rich in omega-3 ALA. A small 2011 trial found flaxseed oil supplements improved skin hydration and roughness over 12 weeks. Whole or ground flaxseed provides the same fats, but direct studies on eating the seeds for skin are limited.
