The best treadmill for home use is one that fits your weight, your space and whether you walk or run. For walking, a 2–3 HP peak DC motor, a 100–110 kg limit and a 110 × 40 cm belt is enough. For running, look for 14+ km/h, a 120 cm+ belt and a strong motor. Heavier users should pick a 120 kg rating.
How we chose: we compared published specifications from each brand’s official store and current listings in September 2026. We haven’t lab-tested these machines, so we don’t rank them by performance. Instead, we match each one to the kind of user it suits best.

How to choose a treadmill for home use
1. Max user weight
Pick a treadmill rated at least 15–20 kg above your body weight. This leaves a safety margin and puts less strain on the motor and belt. If you weigh 100 kg or more, look for a 120 kg rating or higher.
2. Motor: continuous vs peak HP
Indian listings usually show peak horsepower, which is the short burst the motor can reach. The continuous rating tells you what it can sustain. For walking, 1.5 HP continuous is usually fine. For regular running, aim for 2 HP continuous or more.
3. Belt (running surface) size
For walking, about 110 × 40 cm works for most people. For running, a longer belt (120 cm or more) gives you room for a natural stride. Taller users need more length.
4. Speed and incline
Walking rarely needs more than 6–7 km/h, while running needs 12–16 km/h. Incline makes walking harder without running, which helps if you have knee concerns. Manual incline means stepping off to adjust; automatic incline changes at the press of a button.
5. Space, folding and noise
Measure your room. Leave about 2 m behind the treadmill and 0.5 m on each side for safety. Foldable models with a soft-drop system save space in flats.
6. Warranty and service
Check the motor and frame warranty and whether the brand has service engineers in your city. After-sales service matters more than one extra feature.
Treadmill safety at home
- Always clip the safety key to your clothing so the belt stops if you slip.
- Remove the safety key and unplug the treadmill after use, and keep children and pets away from it.
- Start slowly and increase speed gradually. Hold the rails only for balance, not support.
- Use a dedicated wall socket, not a loose extension board.
- If you have heart disease, joint problems or are pregnant, check with your doctor before starting.
Child safety isn’t a small issue: the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has warned about children being pulled under a treadmill belt, so never leave one running or plugged in unattended.
Maintenance tips
- Wipe the belt and deck after use and vacuum under the treadmill every week.
- Check belt tension and alignment every month, following the manual.
- Lubricate the belt with the silicone oil the brand recommends, usually every 1–3 months depending on use.
- Tighten bolts and check the power cord for damage regularly.
How much should you walk or run?
The World Health Organization recommends at least 150–300 minutes of moderate activity (such as brisk walking) or 75–150 minutes of vigorous activity (such as running) each week for adults. A home treadmill makes that easier in heat, rain or pollution. Pair it with our belly fat exercise guide and 20 simple health and fitness tips.
Frequently asked questions
Which treadmill is best for home use in India?
It depends on how you’ll use it. For walking, a 2–3 HP peak treadmill with a 100–110 kg limit is enough. For running, choose a longer belt and 14 km/h or more, like the Fitkit FT100. Heavier users should look for a 120 kg rating, such as the Durafit Heavy Hike.
What motor power do I need for a home treadmill?
For walking, about 1.5 HP continuous (often sold as 2–3 HP peak) is usually enough. For regular running or heavier users, aim for 2 HP continuous or more. Indian listings often show peak HP, so check the continuous rating on the product page if you can.
Which treadmill is best for 120 kg users?
Choose a treadmill rated for at least 120 kg, and ideally 15–20 kg above your weight. In our list, the Durafit Heavy Hike is rated for 120 kg. A sturdier frame, a stronger motor and good cushioning also matter for heavier users.
Is a manual or automatic incline better?
Automatic incline changes with a button while you walk, which is more convenient and good for incline walking workouts. Manual incline is cheaper but you must stop and adjust it. If you plan to use incline often, an automatic incline is worth considering.
Is walking on a treadmill as good as walking outside?
For fitness, both count toward the WHO’s 150–300 minutes of weekly moderate activity. Outdoor walking adds natural terrain and wind resistance, while a treadmill lets you exercise safely in heat, rain or pollution.
How often should I lubricate my home treadmill?
Follow your manual. Most home treadmills need silicone lubricant every 1–3 months, depending on how often they’re used. Also keep the belt clean, check its tension monthly and vacuum under the machine to keep dust out of the motor.
