Yoga for belly fat works best as part of a bigger plan. No asana burns fat from your stomach alone, but regular yoga can support modest weight loss, build core strength and reduce stress. For results, practise yoga 3–5 times a week, include dynamic sequences like Surya Namaskar, add brisk walking, and eat in a small calorie deficit.

Can yoga reduce belly fat?
Indirectly, yes. A 2016 systematic review of randomised trials found that yoga led to modest reductions in body mass index (BMI) in people with overweight or obesity, although many studies were small. Yoga also improves core strength and posture, which can make your waist look flatter, and may help with stress and sleep, both of which affect appetite.
What yoga can’t do is “spot reduce”. Twists and core poses strengthen the muscles under the fat, but fat loss happens across your whole body when you use more energy than you eat. That’s why the plan below combines yoga with walking and simple diet changes.
10 yoga asanas for belly fat (beginner-friendly)
Warm up for 5 minutes first. Move slowly, breathe through your nose, and never push into pain.
1. Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation)
A flowing sequence of 12 poses that raises your heart rate and works the whole body. Start with 3–5 rounds at a steady pace and build to 10–12 rounds.
2. Tadasana (Mountain Pose)
Stand tall, feet together, and stretch your arms overhead while lifting your chest. It trains posture and body awareness. Hold for 5 breaths.
3. Utkatasana (Chair Pose)
Bend your knees as if sitting in a chair, arms raised, weight in your heels. It works the legs and core. Hold 20–30 seconds.
4. Trikonasana (Triangle Pose)
With feet wide apart, reach one hand toward your shin and the other to the ceiling. It stretches the sides of the waist. Hold 20 seconds each side.
5. Phalakasana (Plank)
Hold a straight line from head to heels on hands or forearms. One of the best core strengtheners. Hold 20–40 seconds.
6. Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose)
Lying on your stomach, press your hands down and lift your chest using your back muscles. It stretches the abdomen and strengthens the back. Hold 15–20 seconds.
7. Dhanurasana (Bow Pose)
On your stomach, hold your ankles and lift your chest and thighs. It stretches the front of the body. Beginners can lift one leg at a time. Hold 10–15 seconds.
8. Naukasana (Boat Pose)
Sit, lean back slightly and lift your legs, balancing on your sitting bones. Bend your knees if needed. Hold 10–20 seconds.
9. Setu Bandhasana (Bridge Pose)
Lie on your back with knees bent and lift your hips. It works the glutes, back and core. Hold 20–30 seconds.
10. Pawanmuktasana (Wind-Relieving Pose)
Lie on your back and hug your knees to your chest. A gentle stretch for the lower back to finish your session. Hold 30 seconds.
Safety first
- Avoid deep backbends and strong twists if you have back or neck problems.
- If you’re pregnant, choose prenatal yoga with a qualified teacher.
- Fast breathing practices like kapalbhati aren’t suitable for everyone, including people with high blood pressure, heart disease, hernia or during pregnancy. Learn them from a qualified teacher.
- Stop if you feel pain, dizziness or shortness of breath.

Yoga for belly fat: women and men
The same poses work for everyone. Women with PCOS may find regular yoga helpful for stress and overall fitness alongside medical care. After pregnancy, get your doctor’s OK and rebuild core strength gradually. Men often carry more visceral fat around the belly; combining yoga with strength training and brisk walking works well. Frequently asked questions
Can yoga reduce belly fat?
Yoga can help reduce belly fat as part of overall weight loss, but it can’t burn fat from your stomach alone. A 2016 review found yoga led to modest BMI reductions in people with overweight or obesity. Combine regular yoga with brisk walking and a small calorie deficit for the best results.
Which yoga is best for belly fat?
Dynamic sequences like Surya Namaskar raise your heart rate and burn more energy than slow poses. Core-strengthening poses such as plank, boat pose and bridge build the muscles around your waist. A mix of both, practised 3–5 times a week, works better than any single asana.
How long does it take to reduce belly fat with yoga?
Most people notice changes in strength and posture within 2–4 weeks. Visible fat loss usually takes 8–12 weeks or more of regular practice combined with healthy eating. Measure your waist every two weeks, since the scale doesn’t show muscle gain or posture changes.
Can I do yoga for belly fat at home?
Yes. All 10 asanas in this guide can be done at home on a yoga mat with no equipment. Start with 20-minute sessions three times a week and build up. Follow a video or a class at first if you’re a complete beginner, to learn safe form.
Is Surya Namaskar good for belly fat?
Surya Namaskar is one of the best yoga practices for weight loss because it flows continuously and works the whole body. It won’t target belly fat specifically, but doing 10–12 rounds regularly raises your heart rate and helps you burn more energy, supporting overall fat loss.
Is yoga or walking better for belly fat?
Brisk walking usually burns more calories per minute than gentle yoga, while yoga builds flexibility, core strength and helps with stress. They work well together. A good weekly plan combines 3–5 yoga sessions with 2–3 brisk walks, plus a balanced diet.
